Key Achievements
The book Seismic design and retrofit of bridges (co-authored with M.J.N.
Priestley and F. Seible, John Wiley and Sons, 1996) has been translated into
Chinese and Japanese and sold in more than 10,000 copies, becoming the world
reference text on the subject
The European
School for Advanced Studies in Reduction of Seismic Risk (ROSE School, www.roseschool.it,
founded in the year 2000) is now counting on more than 50 graduate students
in earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, with applications from
more than 60 different countries, therefore becoming one of the world
recognized centre of excellence in the field
The European Centre for Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering
(Eucentre, www.eucentre.it,
founded in the year 2003) is now endowed with the most powerful testing
system in Europe, with a 5.4 x 7.0 m shake table (payload 30 t, amax 1.8 g at
full load, vmax 1.5 m/s, dmax 1 m) and a tri – dimensional large capacity
reaction system
The introduction of a new
seismic code in Italy, after 30 year without significant innovation, has been
deeply innovating the profession, with more than 25,000 engineers following
courses over the past two years, and a consequent real reduction of the
seismic risk, due to the improved professional competence
G.M. Calvi has been one, among
many, of the proposers and developers of the displacement – based design
philosophy for seismic design of structures, which is increasing in consensus
and popularity and may become a kind of standard in the near future
G.M. Calvi has participated, as
designer, consultant or checker in some world – famous construction
challenge, such as the assessment, repair and retrofit of the Bolu viaduct
after the 1999 Duzce earthquake in Turkey and the design and construction of
the Rion – Antirion cable stayed bridge in Greece
